"EnerJuice" based on the Acai

Product launch of a new Acai energy drink "ENERjuice yourself!" ______________

Bruce L Oliver, BS, MBA, FOSA - Enfield, CT  - If you talk to the people in the Amazonian rainforest, they say that the acai berry is their "natural Viagra™".  Well beginning June 20th it will be the prime ingredient in a new hybrid energy drink that is being released.  The first Energy Drink of its kind!!!

Yes you can energize your body and mind with a boost of sustained energy.  A new Acai EnerJuice features a proprietary blend of antioxidant rich fruits, including the #1 superfruit the Acai Berry, and other natural sources of energy.  I tried the drink at a pre-launch in NYC on Saturday, June 6th and it tastes great and is lightly carbonated and helped me stay up until 10 PM that evening.  (That's significant because I had a late night 11:30 PM on Friday only to get up 4.5 hours later for the 2 hour drive to the city.)  Unlike the other drinks on the market this energy drink has no high frutose corn syrup (sugar) or synthetic caffine that is making the headlines today.  It's really a healthy solution to our body's everyday energy needs.

Acai Palm Information

The Acai Palm (Euterpe oleracea), acai berry or fruit commonly referred to as açai (pronounced  ah-sigh-eee) grows in the jungles surrounding the Amazon River, thousands of miles from civilization.  The dark purple berry grows in bunches high above the ground near the top of the palm tree in one of the harshest ecosystems of the world.  For several hundred years it has been known to be an important part of the diet of tribes indigenous to the area. People have been known to eat the berry for it's 'healing powers' and ability to dramatically increase energy.  In his interview of locals NBC's Matt Laurer was told that the acai is the "natural viagra" of the Amazon (watch the video to the right).

According to Dr. Stephen Talcott, assistant professor with the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences at the

University of Florida, "extracts from acai berries triggered a self-destruct response in more than 86% of leukemia cells tested.  The study, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry concluded that this "is an important step toward learning what people may gain from using  beverages, dietary supplements or other products made with the berries."  But are all products made with the acai berry equally beneficial?

Dr. Hugo Rodier writes in the "Health Journal" that  "There are five chief diseases that are plaguing many Americans today.  These diseases include: fibromyalgia, depression, arthritis, diabetes and high blood pressure together with heart diseases and strokes."  Although the acai is not a drug nor is it represented to make miracle cures, Dr. Rodier says that through his research he's found the acai fruit may be beneficial in combating a number of diseases because of the  antioxidants found in it.  The antioxidants (video courtesy of BDU) help our bodies soak up the free-radicals in our bodies that cause inflammation and damage to our cells.

In his book: "Is the Juice Worth the Squeeze? - harnessing the healing power of fruit", Roger C. Rinn, Ph.D. discusses the fruit in detail.  On page 36 he talks about the value of the Acai Palm:

'Brazilians who live in or neat the region of the acai eat it regularly and ascribe to its numerous healing qualities including stopping tooth decay, improving skin diseases and preventing illnesses in general.  The Caboclo consists of three tribes indigenous to the rainforest of Brazil.  According to one study (Murrieta, Dufour K & Siqueira. 1999), the acai palm accounts for a little more than two fifths of the Caboclo's diet by weight!  That is a whole 'bunch' of acai.  And, of special importance is the fact that the acai is harvested after having grown wild which means that the fruit is likely to be loaded with phytonutrients."

Rinn and other notable researchers like Nicholas Perricone, M.D. (Interviewed on Oprah and author of the book published in 2004: "The Perricone Promise: Look Younger, Live Longer in Three Easy Steps (TAKE OFF 19 YEARS IN 28 DAYS)",) agree that the acai is one of the most complete whole foods that have been "re-discovered" in the last 128 years.  In fact, Dr. Perricone goes so far to say that it is the "#1 Super Food".  But they're not alone.

In the 1990's, Dr. Alexander G. Shauss "re-discovered" the berry in his life long quest to study cultures, disease and the diets of people.  In the 18th century, Portugese Explorers documented the value of the berry.  Evidence of this can be found in the archives the University of Coimbra's Anthropolgy Museum and Laboratory in Coimbra, Portugal, home of the 2nd oldest university in the world (Shauss, A.G., Acai from the Amazon, 2008).  According to Shauss, the explorers documented the natives "danced specifically to celebrate the collection of a palm fruit."; the Acai Berry.  Shauss's discovery of the drawings and information documented by the explorers led him to Brazil.  Why don't the tribes in the Brazilian Rainforest have skin cancer?  It's odd since the population is exposed to the brutal sun along the equator all year long.  The equator is the area around the world that has the most direct sunlight with high amounts of UV and Gama Rays.  The types of rays that cause skin cancer.

After over eleven years of study he came to the conclusion that the high amounts of acai in their diets helped ward off the damaging effects of the sun.  After submitting the fruit to five research labs in the United States he learned that the acai contains a large quantity of phytonutients from the families of anthocyanins and flavonoids including proanthocyanidin and resveratrol (Schauss, Wu, Prior, Ou, Patel, Huang & Kababick, 2006).  In addition, Shauss learned that it is extremely rich in antioxidants(vitamin A, calcium, amino acids, and some vitamin C), Omega 3 fatty acids, fiber, protiens, carbohydrates and minerals.  The raw fruit also has an exceedingly high ORAC score, even higher than the well known wild blue berry grown in the wilds of the State of Maine.  So why haven't we discovered this acai berry until now?  Well, within 8 hours of being picked, it rots.  A major problem if you are in Southern Brazil or North America or anywhere outside of the rainforest.  But Dr. Shauss a way to capture the full value of the raw fruit and more.

Alexander G. Shauss, Ph.D. FACN - discusses the acai berry at a conference in Orlando, FL (7 minutes long)

All Acai is Not the Same!

The "freeze-dried" process that Dr. Shauss patented is the most expensive process known to be used to bring the product back to the United States and used in one proprietary juice blend.  The freeze-dried Açai has an ORAC score of 1026, 10 times greater than the air dried fruit that most juice suppliers use.  As a matter of fact the ORAC score is three times greater than the Wild Blueberry (ORAC of 260) picked in Maine.  The form of acai (spray-dried) that most juice vendors use only has an ORAC SCORE of 60* (Alexander G. Shauss, Ph.D., FACN, 2008)

In addition to the major difference in the ORAC score of the off the shelf juices found in the grocery stores is the fact that most suppliers add high fructose corn syrup to their blends to mask the bitter taste of the berry subtracting some of the benefits of drinking the juice to begin with.

There is only one blend that makes the synergistic effect of the Açai most desireable.  Because we need more than one or two antioxidants we need more than one fruit in the blend.  Also our bodies don't produce minerals and we need enzymes, amino acids, polysaccharides, flavonoids (pheno-protectors) and essential fatty acids found in a variety of deeply colored fruits.  These compounds are essential to our health and well being and the only way we get them is to consume them.  They must be in our food.  The greater the variety in our diet, the better.

What's the BEST Acai Juice Blend to consume?

For generations, the tribes in the Amazon have aquired the taste for the berry.  From the time that they are born the berry is a major part of their diet, but most Westerners find it to be like the taste of a berry mixed with bitter chocolate.  To counter balance this some juice producers add some form of sugar.  The blend that is the most natural uses 19 organically grown fruit found in the most remote parts of the world.  Some I heard of and some I haven't until recently.  The blend that I'm talking about uses 18 other fruit and berries in addition to acai which makes up almost one third of the blend.  Like I said some we've heard about and some we haven't: Wolfberry, Lychee Fruit, Pomegranate, Aronia Berry, Camu-Camu, and others more well known such as: Blueberry, Cranberry, Banana, Pear, Prunes, Purple Grape, Central Asian Apple, White Grapes, Apricots, Kiwi Fruit, Passion Fruit, Acerola Cherry, and Bilberry Berry.  For an informational video about this proprietary blend and the company behind it Click Here
