Thinking about Leadership
The price paid ...
I just came back from a seminar on leadership.
Dave and Tina Gurubel of Georgia talked about the price of being a good
leader and how good leaders improve the lives of others.
Dave talked about thinking. He said: "Thinking is the most
important way to improve yourself." Read, listen, observe, then ask
how can I improve myself using what I've just learned. What are my
reasons for doing what I'm doing? What results am I getting?
Tina asked an interesting question. "What are your bookshelves filled
with?" Is my shelf filled with - brand new - never read - books on
leadership OR is it filled with worn books filled with notes made by a
thoughtful reader? Have I paid the price to become a good leader and
am I doing all that I can to improve the lives of others?
Think about it!
LEADERS FOLLOWING LEADERS? ...
One of my
favorite books is "Lincoln on Leadership" by Donald T. Philips (I need
to read it again) but I just got the new book "Lincoln's Rise to the
Presidency" by William C. Harris that I want to read next (as well as
the last monthly book). Lincoln is my inspiration, he persevered
when most would have quit. LOSERS quit when they FAIL while
WINNERS fail until they SUCCEED!!!
Currently I'm studying the concepts outlined by Orrin and Chris in their
book: "Launching the Leadership Revolution". I believe that I need
to know it inside and out.
When I said that we were building a community of one million leaders
someone responded to me recently and said "Everyone can't be a leader".
They don't understand that the best leaders know when to follow or give
up position to another leader. It's not about being in charge,
it's about getting the job done. Real leaders influence the
outcome even when they don't have the positional leadership title.
What do you think?
CALLING
ALL LEADERS...
Have you
ever asked yourself: "What can I do? I'm not happy with things as
they are but what can I do?" Well, we are looking for people who
are asking themselves those questions. There is something that you
can do. Every great event started with one person.
Have you
ever gone to a ball game and seen the wave move through a crowd
wondering how it started? I experienced this phenomena a couple of
weeks ago. A young woman in line asked if people around her wanted
to start the wave. Some shrugged their shoulders and others
expressed embarrasment that she was interested in getting it started.
So with the help of a couple of people around her she said 1, 2, 3 and
they threw up their hands shouting "Whoo". After ten to twelve
failures, she managed to succeed sending the wave around the corner over
1,000 feet from us. Several minutes later it came around the
corner back to us. If she would have quit after one or two
attempts, she would have failed. But, she continued to fail until
she SUCCEEDED!
This is a
simplistic but very effective way to demonstrate that LOSERS QUIT when
they fail & WINNERS FAIL until they SUCCEED! If she listened to
the naysayers who originally showed their reluctance to get things
started, she would have failed. But she kept trying until we all
saw the dramatic results.
